Shelved in North America for its radical politics and wallop of a downer ending—the deaths of Che Guevara and Malcolm X were cited inspirations—Corbucci’s bleak, wintry shoot-’em-up, set during Utah’s Great Blizzard of 1899, has grown legendary in reputation, with renegades Alex Cox and Quentin Tarantino at the top of its list of admirers. (The latter borrows liberally from it in his own ​“snow Western,” The Hateful Eight.) Herzog madman Klaus Kinski plays a bloodthirsty bounty hunter who locks horns with a mute gunslinger (Jean-Louis Trintignant, of recent Haneke). Spaghetti maestro Ennio Morricone scores.
