“Beware,” cautions Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide, “unless seeing Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon in bed together is your idea of a good time.” Well, now that you mention it ... David Bowie co-stars in debuting director Tony Scott’s shamelessly chic guilty pleasure, an outré exercise in sex and blood and rock-and-roll that became a cult favorite in the Lesbian community. The film is set in Manhattan, where immortal bloodsucker Deneuve is just dying to sink her formidable canines into the fetching neck of celebrity doctor Sarandon, an expert on aging. Bowie is Deneuve’s long-time, not-quite-immortal companion. English rockers Bauhaus, in a concert cameo, deliver “Bela Lugosi's Dead” in a demimonde discotheque. The film’s use of the aria “Viens, Mallika,” from the Léo Delibes opera Lakmé, popularized that piece and turned it into a soundtrack staple.
