35mm PRINT! ► The debut feature of Kathryn Bigelow — still the only woman ever to win the Best Director Oscar (for 2008’s The Hurt Locker) — is a wrist-sucking doozy: a moody, stylish, darkly erotic modern-day Vampire Western set amidst the prairie dust and pick-up trucks of rural America. Farm boy Caleb (Adrian Pasdar) falls for country girl Mae (Jenny Wright), only to learn she is part of a pack of murderous vampires roaming the back roads in a motorhome. Several cast members had appeared in Aliens, directed by Bigelow’s future husband James Cameron, the year before: Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and Jenette Goldstein. “Bigelow has made bigger movies but none better. Near Dark is a poetic horror film that draws its power from the outlaw mythology of Bonnie and Clyde and Gun Crazy (or maybe the Manson Family)” (J. Hoberman, Village Voice).
